WRCC Urges Republicans to Write In Anne Brensley for Secretary of State on September 1
WORCESTER, Mass. — The Worcester Republican City Committee is urging Republican voters across Worcester to write in Anne Brensley for Secretary of State in the September 1 Republican primary.
There is no Republican candidate printed on the primary ballot for Secretary of State. Brensley is mounting a statewide write-in campaign to secure the Republican nomination and give Massachusetts voters a contested race for the office in November.
Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Amy Carnevale has also called on Republicans to support Brensley’s write-in effort, emphasizing the importance of competitive statewide elections and greater accountability in state government.
Brensley was previously the Massachusetts Republican Party’s endorsed candidate for Lieutenant Governor after winning the support of more than 56 percent of delegates at the party’s April convention in Worcester. She ultimately failed to qualify for the primary ballot after problems emerged with signatures collected by a paid vendor. Brensley alleged that some of the signatures provided to her campaign were fraudulent, and state proceedings subsequently examined similar allegations involving the same signature gatherer and other Republican campaigns.
She has since redirected her campaign toward Secretary of State, the office responsible for administering Massachusetts elections and overseeing the Commonwealth’s ballot-access system.
5,000 Write-In Votes Required
Brensley must receive at least 5,000 write-in votes statewide — and more votes than any other candidate seeking the Republican nomination — to qualify for the November ballot.
Under Massachusetts law, a write-in candidate in a state primary must receive at least the same number of votes as the number of certified signatures normally required to qualify for that office. Secretary of State candidates are required to submit 5,000 signatures.
Five thousand votes statewide is an achievable threshold, and Worcester Republicans can make a meaningful contribution toward reaching it.
How to Vote for Anne Brensley
Republican primary voters should:
Locate Secretary of State on the ballot.
Find the write-in space for that office.
Write Anne Brensley in the space provided.
Fill in the oval next to the write-in line.
Massachusetts election guidance instructs write-in voters to provide the candidate’s name and address in the space provided. Voters should make their intent clear and ensure their write-in is entered under the correct office.
The same process applies to early and mail-in ballots.
A Competitive Election Matters
Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin has held the office since 1995. The Secretary’s responsibilities include administering elections and voter registration as well as overseeing public records, corporations and securities, and other critical functions of state government.
Regardless of party, important statewide offices should be subject to scrutiny, debate, and competition.
MassGOP Chairman Amy Carnevale recently urged Republicans to remain engaged in the September 1 primary, arguing that participation in primaries, campaigns, and party organizations is essential to building a stronger Republican Party and challenging decades of one-party control in Massachusetts.
